Before begin covering the topic, is important to recognize some basic issues, such as the meaning of trade unions.

Trade unions are: "Organisations that represent people at work. Their purpose is to protect and improve people's pay and conditions of employment. They also campaign for laws and policies which will benefit working people."

The use of trade unions increase the power of decisions of the workers, because the voice of only one would be difficult listened, but the claims of a trade union make a higher repercussion in companies.

All kind of jobs are covered by trade unions, and sometimes trade unions are formed around a particular job in a specific industry. And others are a mixture of of workers of different sectors and jobs. And it is because sometimes they are merged with others trade unions, increasing the membership and influence.

In the case of Europe is important that trade unions and employers build a social partnership, seeking to build consensus in order to improve business performance and service quality, and they must operate in an environment of problem solving. In the case of trade unions social partnership means management change, that is the main objective of the creation of a trade union, necessary changes needed by workers: workplace, working practices, worker interests.

The European trade unions are focused on three aims:

• A joint commitment to the success of the enterprise

• A recognition that there must be a joint effort to build trust in the workplace

• A joint declaration recognizing the legitimacy of the role of each party.

Trade unions are a good opportunity to create a discussion place about issues such as: fairness, productivity and investment. And in terms of the enterprise according to the IPD (Institute of personnel development’s) trade unions can contribute facilitating the effective adoption of necessary change.

European trade unions must assume a more cooperative approach in order to improve the union-employer relationship and finding way to cooperate with management, and for others trade unions it may mean organize the resources in the way to influence conflictual situations.
